Monogram Etiquette

Monogram Etiquette

We consider monograms to be an art form.  While there are guidelines and rules for how to form a monogram and where to put what letter, we believe that anything goes!  Have fun with monograms, and make yours your own.   However, we do want to share the widely-accepted practices and procedures for monograms, so here you are.

Monograms with a larger center letter:

  • Single person: the last name is the larger letter in the center position, and the first name initial is on the left with the middle name position on the right (Example: Alice Beverly Clinker's monogram would be ACB)
  • Married person: the married name initial is the larger letter in the center position, and the first name initial is on the left with the maiden name on the right
  • Married couple: the married name initial is the larger letter in the center position, and the first name initials are on either side (traditionally the woman's first name initial is in the left position)

Monograms with same size letters:

  • Single or married, man or woman: the letters are in the same order as the name; this type of monogram may consist of two to four letters

Social Monograms always asks for a monogram to be entered in the order it should appear.  Please take care to note if you have chosen a monogram with a larger center letter or a monogram with same size letters and enter the monogram accordingly.
